Create Jack o’ Lanterns from Tangerines or Cuties
Ten years ago (2013) I created these fun jack o’ lanterns from tangerines. I sold most of what I made at a craft show. The 3 left over became part of my Halloween display in my studio. Since they were made 10 years ago, the orange coloring had faded to brown. Well….a few days ago, I used orange acrylic paint and dry brushed them. It gave them new life! Now they will forever be orange. Below are photos of the 3 jack o’s I made 10 years ago with a face lift.
I have them hanging on a black feather tree I purchased several years ago from Bethany Lowe.
The Boston Terrier Halloween ornament was purchased from the very talented Arbutus Hunter. I did an interview with her years ago. Click here for the interview and to see more of her work.
NEW JACK O’s
Earlier this week I created 8 new jack o’s made from cuties. They are much smaller than the ones I made from tangerines. They are very cute but were more difficult to carve because of their small size. I created a video tutorial for my Whimsies (this is my Patreon membership account, more on that later) where I show step by step how to make these adorable Jack O’s for your Halloween decorating or you can make them for gifts.
Below are the photos of how they turned out. The tree was purchased from Amazon which you can purchase here.
I love how they all have different personalities!
My intention was to put orange battery operated tea lights inside so they would glow in the dark but because I made with with cuties, they are too small to fit the tea light inside! So, if you make some, I recommend using tangerines.
I filled them with rose hips available at Factory Direct Craft online but you could fill them with moss, cinnamon scented potpourri, bittersweet (real or fake), etc.
I used rusty wire for the hangers which you can purchase from Factory Direct Craft online. The orange tea lights are available here.
To see the entire process via a video tutorial, you’d need to join my Patreon at tier 4. My Patreon is geared towards needlearts, such as, cross stitch and punchneedle, but recently I’ve decided to offer monthly DIY projects. Some projects will use PDF downloads of my original paintings so your projects will truly be unique. To learn more about becoming a Whimsy, check out my Patreon here.
Happy Creating!
